Oaxacan Odyssey

Oaxaca
3 days

A jewel in southern Mexico with a rich tapestry of cultural heritage, historical significance, and artistic expression. The city's colonial architecture, dating back to the XVI and XVII centuries, echoes the tales of Zapotec civilization. Its vibrant streets pulse with the warmth of locals, artisans skillfully crafting black pottery and intricate rugs. It is a city where every step unfolds layers of history, and every flavor tells a story, making Oaxaca an enchanting destination for those seeking an authentic and immersive cultural journey.

Day 1

Welcome to Oaxaca!

Immerse yourself in the beauty of this city with a guided tour showcasing the best of colonial architecture from the XVI and XVII centuries. Explore the rich history as you stroll through the vibrant streets, encountering the warm and welcoming locals. Delve into the culture and learn about the Zapotecas heritage. Visit enchanting churches, historical sites, and witness the craftsmanship of dedicated artisans creating authentic pieces like black pottery and handmade rugs.

For dinner, enjoy a unique experience as you cook your own quesadillas alongside a local indigenous woman, who shares her culture through the preparation of traditional gastronomy. Taste the exquisite flavor of the famous “quesillo”, a typical cheese made in Oaxaca.

Day 2

Monte Alban, Arrazola, Convent, and San Bartolo Coyotepec

We will start our day by charging ourselves with energy in what was once the largest city of the Zapotecs, holders of dominant power in the region of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca: Monte Albán, strategically located on a mountain in the center of the Central Valleys, from where all its flanks can be observed.

We will visit Arrazola, a community dedicated to the production of alebrijes carved in wood, which are finely decorated with vibrant colors. It could be said that alebrijes are representations of various demons; their bodies can have dragon heads, rooster legs, and fish tails. We will appreciate the imagination of each craftsman, who will gladly tell the story of each of their works.

We will continue our journey to Cuilapam de Guerrero, where we will visit the majestic Dominican convent complex from the 16th century, featuring the Open Chapel, the unfinished basilica-style church, and the ex-convent, considered an important point in history as General Vicente Guerrero was executed here. Finally, we will visit San Bartolo Coyotepec: the town where Barro Negro (black clay) originated. We will visit one of the most traditional houses in the production of Barro Negro, Dona Rosa's house. Here, we can learn about the artisanal process for making various figures of this pottery, and, of course, explore the workshops where everything takes place.

Day 3

Tule, Teotitlan, Mitla, Hierve el Agua, and a mezcal factory

Today we will take the tour to the legendary City of the Dead: Mitla, but not before visiting everything we have on this wonderful route. We will start at El Árbol del Tule, a legendary cypress with over 2000 years of history, adorned with various animal figures on its trunk. It will depend on each person's imagination to see anything from an elephant, crocodile, to a gorilla face.

We will continue to Teotitlán del Valle, internationally famous for the production of wool rugs. The artisans will demonstrate the process from obtaining wool to dyeing it with natural dyes such as cochineal, roots, and herbs. Continuing to the magical town of Mitla, formerly known as the "City of the Dead," built by the Mixtecs, where we will admire the syncretism of its buildings with walls adorned with stone fretwork. We will visit its church built on pyramids, like many other churches that the Spaniards built for evangelization.

We will explore the site of Hierve el Agua, where time has delicately crafted petrified waterfalls from calcium carbonate, creating an almost surreal landscape. We will take a walk to admire the landscapes it offers. Afterward, we'll return to the city of Oaxaca to visit a Mezcal factory, where we will learn about the manufacturing process of this elixir of the Gods, from agave cutting to distillation, culminating in a delightful tasting experience.

The remainder of the evening is yours to either rest at the hotel or explore the city for a delightful dinner.
