7 days
Go on a 6-day adventure through 5 ecosystems protected by united Zapotec communities. Starting from Oaxaca's highest hill and ending at a Pacific Ocean beach near Huatulco, this trek offers a unique blend of physical activity and nature immersion. Trek, connect, and gain insights into diverse community life.
Day 1
Departure from Oaxaca | 8:00 am
The journey to the community where our adventure begins takes approximately 6.5 hours. This is an agrarian community engaged in a variety of sustainable economic activities, including the utilization of pine wood, cultivation of coffee, maize, avocado, heirloom tomatoes, and honey production. It boasts a spectacular mountainous landscape and serves as a beautiful example of a well-organized, progressive, and industrious community with a high quality of life. Amidst the communal lands nestled in the forest, you will savor regional dishes crafted from local ingredients, offering a taste of the authentic local flavors.
Day 2
Monday Hike | 9:00 am
Enjoy breakfast and start a journey of approximately 6 hours of a moderate intensity level walk through a forest of pine and fir trees. 4:00 pm: Arrival at the campsite where a welcome meal, prepared with regional products, awaits you.
Day 3
Tuesday Hike | 9 to 10 hours
Prepare for a high intensity level hike! This route, besides offering beautiful landscapes, is particularly intriguing due to its biological diversity. Witness how different products are cultivated in various climatic zones. The community here is Zapotec, and this is the language through which its inhabitants communicate. On this day, we descend 2000 meters through a steep slope to reach the bottom of the canyon where two communities converge. Since this community lacks vehicular access, you'll enjoy several easy river crossings and have the opportunity to swim.
Day 4
Wednesday Hike | 6 to 7 hours
We will follow the river, passing through areas of wild mangoes, coffee plantations shaded by guanacaste and ceiba trees during a moderate intensity level walk. Around 4:30 pm, we will arrive at a campsite set up in a paradisiacal spring. Here, besides being able to swim, we will visit the cave paintings that date back thousands of years.
Day 5
Thursday Hike | 6 hours
Today we will pass through an amazing forest of guanacaste trees and an abandoned coffee plantation during a low intensity level walk across the Copalita River; we'll enter the jungle that surrounds the coffee fields of the next community. We'll visit the botanical garden where the women of the community cultivate bromeliads, medicinal plants, and the biodynamic fields they have established within the jungle.
Day 6
Friday Hike | 6 hours
Prepare to descend the river for 3 hours on a low intensity level walk until we reach the next community abundant with birds. After eating and resting, we will navigate for another 3 hours on the river until we reach La Bocana Beach in Huatulco, arriving around 6:30 pm.
Day 7
Time to relax on the beach!
After all these days of trekking, take a day to unwind and treat yourself at Huatulco: a picturesque resort destination known for its stunning coastline and natural beauty. Whether you choose to do nothing, indulge in a spa day, or simply lounge by the beach, it's well-deserved relaxation just for you. Enjoy!
