Day 1
Welcome to Oaxaca!
Embark on a fascinating journey through the beautiful city of Oaxaca, exploring its colonial center on foot with your professional guide. You will begin the tour with a visit to the majestic Santo Domingo Temple, a sublime example of baroque architecture, as well as the historical Aqueduct "Arquitos de Xochimilco," a gem that transports us through time. You’ll walk around the Andador Turístico where local life and cultural expressions converge in a vibrant spectacle. The grandeur of the Cathedral will capture your attention and at the Zocalo, you’ll experience the unique energy of this central space, surrounded by iconic buildings, artistic expressions, and witnessing the daily life of the city.
Day 2
A Zapotecan Legacy
We will start our day visiting what was once the largest city of the Zapotecs, holders of dominant power in the region of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca: Monte Albán. Later, we will visit Arrazola, a community dedicated to the production of alebrijes carved in wood, which are finely decorated with vibrant colors. It could be said that alebrijes are representations of various demons; their bodies can have dragon heads, rooster legs, and fish tails.
We will continue our journey to Cuilapam de Guerrero, where we will visit the majestic Dominican convent complex from the 16th century, featuring the Open Chapel, the unfinished basilica-style church, and the ex-convent. Finally, we will visit San Bartolo Coyotepec, the town where Barro Negro (black clay) originated. Here, we can learn about the artisanal process for making various figures of this pottery, and, of course, explore the workshops where everything takes place.
Day 3
Taste the flavors of Oaxaca
Embark on a delightful journey through the culinary flavors of Oaxaca! Our first stop takes us to Reyes Etla, where we'll witness the meticulous process of crafting and savor the rich flavors of Queso and Quesillo, the famous Oaxacan cheese. Next, in San Andrés Huayapam, we'll indulge in a sensory experience with Tejate, accompanied by the exquisite taste of Tamales made with mole wrapped in banana leaves and Totomoxtle. Additionally, we'll witness the artistry of toasting and grinding cacao using traditional metate stones. Finally, in Tlacolula, prepare your taste buds for a treat as we try in the traditional Pan de Cazuela paired with authentic hot chocolate. This gastronomic odyssey promises a feast for the senses, unveiling the diverse and mouthwatering culinary traditions of Oaxaca.
Day 4
Mezcal Roads
Today we will visit the legendary City of the Dead: Mitla, but not before visiting everything we have on this wonderful route. We will start at El Árbol del Tule, a legendary cypress with over 2000 years of history, adorned with various animal figures on its trunk.
We will continue to Teotitlán del Valle, internationally famous for the production of wool rugs. The artisans will demonstrate the process from obtaining wool to dyeing it with natural dyes such as cochineal, roots, and herbs. Continuing to the magical town of Mitla, formerly known as the "City of the Dead," built by the Mixtecs, where we will admire the syncretism of its buildings with walls adorned with stone fretwork. We will visit its church built on pyramids, like many other churches that the Spaniards built for evangelization.
Later, we will explore the site of Hierve el Agua, where time has delicately crafted petrified waterfalls from calcium carbonate, creating an almost surreal landscape. We will take a walk to admire the landscapes it offers. Afterward, we'll return to the city of Oaxaca to visit a Mezcal factory, where we will learn about the manufacturing process of this elixir of the Gods, from agave cutting to distillation, culminating in a delightful tasting experience.
Day 5
A Natural Wonder
When it comes to exploring magical places, discover the beauty of San José del Pacífico, a town nestled in the natural surroundings of the state of Oaxaca, where you'll find yourself surrounded by majestic mountains. Upon reaching the highest part of the sierra, you'll encounter the most breathtaking views. You will be able to cross a suspended bridge at dusk to appreciate the spectacle of its lights. In this region, the climate is humid and cold, making temazcales (steam baths) famous, as the climate and forest environment create an ideal setting to enjoy this activity. This ritual brings purification benefits, and locals claim it helps counteract respiratory, pulmonary, or bone and joint diseases such as arthritis. You can take a pendulum jump or launch yourself from an 800-meter-long zip line, where you'll have a unique panoramic view.
Day 6
Puerto Escondido & Fountain of Youth
It's time to unwind! Known as the national capital of surfing, Puerto Escondido, meaning hidden port, is a paradise for lovers of pristine beaches, surfing, and a laid-back atmosphere. Whether you're riding the waves on its renowned beaches, spotting turtles, or indulging in the local cuisine, this coastal retreat guarantees an unforgettable experience. Your accommodation is in a meticulously designed oceanfront hotel, where you can relax and immerse yourself in the enchantment of this remarkable place.
For an enchanting night, set sail on a private boat journey through the Manialtepec lagoon to witness the mesmerizing display of bioluminescent plankton. If we maintain silence, we will realize that there is a whole world we cannot see but can hear. It's like seeing shooting stars in the water that glow upon contact with it—millions of microorganisms that activate an energy discharge in the form of light when touched. Some believe that this luminous lagoon is a kind of "fountain of youth."
